Work Programme 6 (Living life and doing things together). Our contribution to WP6 will be to develop a decision analytic economic model, which is able to account for the main care pathways. This model will then be used to explore the potential cost effectiveness of a pilot trial of self-management for couples living with dementia in the neighbourhood. The model will be populated with observed service use and health benefit data collected in the pilot trial. The model will explore the extrapolation of the pilot trial data over alternative time horizons (e.g. 5 and 10 years), patient populations and settings.
Work Programme 5 (Developing the evidence base for evaluating dementia training in NHS hospitals). Our contribution to WP5 will be to develop a decision analytic economic model, which accounts for the sequence of possible events subsequent to the decision to provide training within the care setting. This model will be used to explore the costs, outcomes and relative cost effectiveness of alternative training interventions from the perspective of health and social care services and patients. The model will be populated with hospital survey and episode data, collected by WP5 colleagues and by literature review.
Work Programme 3 (Developing a core outcome set). The WP3 team are identifying outcomes and measures. Our contribution to WP3 will be to understand the priorities and preferences of users, carers, relevant health care professionals and policy makers for the different types of outcomes. We expect that the value of outcomes will vary from person to person, because the benefits of care are subjective. Consider the example of buying a car:
Which aspects or attributes of the cars shown are most important to you? How do they influence your choice?
Our work in WP 3 will include a Stated Preference Survey. A Stated Preference Survey presents options so that the respondent weighs up which is most important to them (trade off). In the survey we will present participants with pairs of choices (presented in a similar way to the car choice above) and ask the participant to think about:
- Which are the most important aspects?
- Which are the least important aspects?
- How much would you pay to get the most important aspect
- How long would you wait to get the most important aspect
