Professor John Keady

Welcome to the website of the ESRC/NIHR Neighbourhoods and Dementia study [2014-2019]. It is my pleasure and privilege to be the Chief Investigator of this study and to be part of a research team that offers the opportunity for people with dementia and/or their family members to be involved, or have the opportunity to be involved, throughout each of the eight Work Programmes that make up the Neighbourhoods study. A quick glance at Work Programme 1 will reveal the groups of people with dementia who are the cornerstone of our work.

The eight Work Programmes that make up the Neighbourhoods study connect together to help us understand more about what it is like to live with dementia in an everyday context. We have framed this around people, spaces and places. I am especially delighted that the Neighbourhoods study works closely with the Center for Dementia Research in Sweden to undertake and promote this study and that we have five PhD students attached to the study; two based in England, one in Scotland and two in Sweden.

The Neighbourhoods study is about more than the Chief Investigator and I would personally like to thank everyone associated with the study, from administrators through to people with dementia, family carers, service providers, technicians and esteemed academics/policy makers who are giving their time and expertise to the study. We can only learn and grow if we learn to grow together. I can think of no better arena in which to do this.
